SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs. T. McArthur, Raetihi, has been visiting Wanganui. Mrs. Whiteman, Palmerston North, is visiting Wanganui. Mrs. Hamish Wilson, Bulls, was a ' visitor to Wanganui this week. i Mrs. Eric Long, Inglewood, has returned home after a short holiday in t Wanganui spent with relatives. Mrs. Cecil Rhodes, Karioi, is visiting Wanganui for a few days, staying with her mother, Mrs. B. J. Meads. Westmere. Mrs. N. Crawford, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs. R. A. Parkard, Jellicoe Street, Wanganui East. Mesdames 1. Gould, Williams, Robinson and Al. Munro were Wanganui visitors to Hawera on Tuesday for the annual conference of the South Taranaki Federation of Women's Institutes. Misses Ray McMillan, Glen Thornton, and Saxon Bullock, all from the Wanganui Girls’ College, left Wanganui yesterday to attend the Wellington Teachers’ Training College. HITHER AND THITHER Voluntary Aid Workers’ Shop Days. The Majestic Corner shop was a ‘scene of much activity yesterday when Voluntary Aid workers were busy receiving donations and selling produce, cakes and flowers. Among the collections given was a gift of three sackfuls of vegetables from Chinese gardeners. The Kaitoke V.A.W.’s had charge of the shop during the morning, Westmere workers taking over for the afternoon. Excellent results were reported for the day. To-day the shop will be managed by the Wanganui Voluntary Aid Workers' Committee and to-morrow, the final day, by St. John's Hill Patriotic Committee. Prisoners-of-War Relatives’ Assn. The monthly meeting of the Wanganui branch of the Prisoners-of-War Relatives' Association was held yesterday afternoon in the Y.M.-Y.W.C.A. Lounge, when there was a good attendance of members. Mrs. Douglas Wilson, chairman, presided and after welcoming all present read a special prayer for prisoners of war. Il was stated that the membership now stood at 70. Mrs. Wilson react a circular letter giving a brief history of the birth and growth of the British Prisoners-of-War Relative's' Association, which showed t he good work the association was doing in the interests of the prisoners of war. Also that tht're were 50 branches and 30 new ones pending. Pictures cut from newspapers of groups of prisoners in the various camps brought to (he meeting by members were displayed. Extracts from letters were read and the contents revealed many interesting sidelights on the lives of the New Zealand prisoners of war. Afternoon lea was served. Fordeli Red Cross Annual Meeting. The second annual meeting or the Fordeil Reel Cross bub-centre was .held in the Cnurch nail recently. Mrs. nee presided over a lair attendance oi members. The report ana balancesheet was presented and disclosed a successiul years work. Sewing ana knitting was done during the year tor Red Cross, reiugees ana the emergency chest. Much woiK has been done towards equipping a lirst-aia post, memoers hau laundered nine sugar sacks ot tyre waste ana these were being made into bandages, r lelo dressings were ready for local Home Guard. Several memoers had obtained home nursing certmcates, ano many more were now attending first aid lectures. A shop day was neid recently; proceeds from same amounted to £26, bringing the sub-centres credit balance to over 170. Oliicers elected were as 10l lows: President, Airs. Williams and Al. AicGregor. GOLDbN wedding MR. AND MRS. J. I’. LAIRD. OVER 70 YEARS IN WANGANUI. An interesting event took place at the home 01. Air. and Airs. J. r. Dairu, victoria Avenue, the occasion being their golden wedding, iney were married in Wanganui by tne Rev. James Treadwell, April Li, 1802. Air. and Airs. Laird have lived here all their lives. Airs. Laird was the second daughter of the late Air. and Airs James Brown, ot Wilson Street, Air. brown came from Tasmania at tne lime of the Gabriel Gully gold rush, bringing a team and waggon with him. Later on he came to Wanganui, ant. was engaged in carrying worn toward, the enu oi. the Maori war. He then established a wood and coal bushiest lin this town. Air. J. P. Baird is int second son of the late Air. and Mrs. James Laird, ot Glasgow Street. Mr. J. Laird was at one time Mayor oi Wanganui. Mr. J. P. Laird was born in New Plymouth in 1864 and with hi.-, parents came to Wanganui in 186 i. He, with his brother, Air. Alex Laird continued the business oi nursery am. seedsmen, which was established by their falner in 1868. When they retired from buiness, Mr. and Airs. Laird lived a few years a. 1 Westmere, coming to town to live six 1 years ago. There were three sons ana one daughter in the family. The eldest soil, Leonard, lost his life in Palestine in tne 1914-18 war. The youngest son Maurice (who also served in the last war) was accidentll.. killed at Te Awamutu live years ago The second son, Ronald, lives a: Claudelands. The daughter is Mrs. Reg Clements, Westmere. A large number ol friends and rvmt.ons conveyed their respects to the happy couple. A feature of the occasion was a beautiful two-tiered wedding cake, made by their daughter, Mrs. Clements. Air. and Mrs. Laird were the recipients of numerous and beautiful gifts testifying to the high regard in which they were held in the district, where they had spent so many years. There are eight grandchildren, one great-grandson, whose lather is serving overseas. Their eldest grandson is in tne Air Force, ihe guests were met and welcomed by Mrs?
