WEEK-END PRODUCTION

PROBLEM IN AUSTRALIA "STAGGERED” TIME OFF (Recd. 7 p.m.) Sydney. April 6. The introduction of a seven-day working week with time off “staggered" throughout the week, has been suggested to the Federal Government, says the Melbourne correspondent of the Sydney Daily Telegraph. The Government is concerned at the almost complete cessation of production at week-ends and at the congregation of large crowds at sporting and functions. For security reasons the Government is especially anxious to discourage the congregation of large crowds. Cabinet has not. yet considered the matter. It is unlikely to agree to the big retail stores or hotels remaining open on Saturdays and Sundays, because it is anxious to curl ail this type of spending. but it is felt that war factories, which now close, and essential services. such as post offices, banks, insurance companies and food retailers, could be opened at week-ends.
