QUEEN TO THE RESCUE
RESPONSE TO APPEAL OF SCOTS LASSIE In Buckinsham Palace recently the Queen opened a letter that was addressed to "Her Majesty The Queen Personally.” And this is what she read: “Your Majesty. I appeal to you as one Scottish lassie to another. I am in love with a Polish soldier, and he doesn't want to marry me. But, your Majesty, it is most imperative that he should marry me as soon as possible. and I beg of you to help me.” The Queen sent this letter to Countess Cecile Raczynski, wife of the Polish Ambassador: "My dear Countess," the Queen wrote, "isn't there something you can do?” The Countess passed the Scots girl's letter and the Queen's note to her husband, who passed it on with another note to the officer commanding a Polish camp in Scotland. The Polish C.O. summoned a Polish private and gave him a Polish talking to. Several weeks later the Queen let it be known to friends at Court that she had received another letter from the Scottish lassie: “Your Majesty. I am now the happiest woman in the world. My Polish lover married me, and I owe it all to you.”
