FLOOD IN RIVER

RAETIHI HIGHWAY OPEN. Heavy rain throughout the district on Thursday and Friday was responsible for the Wanganui River reaching a level, only a few feet below the January flood, on Saturday. The river rose to the level of the Pipiriki wharf early on Friday and after a slight drop at noon rose again suddenly to a peak, early on Saturday morning, of 20 feet above the wharf. At high water in Wanganui on Saturday the river was only four feet below the Town Wharf, but with the acceding tide the flood vyaters dropped quickly. Slight flooding occurred ir the Wanganui East Esplanade but no damage resulted. The Automobile Association (Wanganui) stated yesterday that the main highway between Wanganui and Raetihi, which was blocked by slips, is now c*pen, bat care should be exercised on the Three Lakes Hill as the road is very greasy.
