PATRIOTIC APPEAL
MINISTERS’ ASSOCIATION URGES SUPPORT j DIRECT GIVING ADVOCATED A call for support of the Patriotic Council’s £1,000,000 appeal is made by the Wanganui Ministers’ Association in a letter addressed to the citizens of Wanganui and signed by the representatives of the association, Rev. A. C. McLean and Ven. Archdeacon J. R. Young. Following is the letter: “Last year when a very energetic campaign was waged in Wanganui to raise the city’s quota for the National Patriotic Fund, the members of the Ministers’ Association felt that it, was a great pity that methods other than direct giving had to be resorted to. We made strong representations against the use of undesirable methods of raising such a worthy fund. We assured the Patriotic Committee that if a future appeal should be launched on a basis of direct giving, we would do all in cur power to assist. Such an appeal is now being made, and the committee. mindful’ of our offer, has called us into co-operation, and we gladly lespond. ‘The situation as we see it is this: “The National Patriotic Fund is thoroughly worthy 01. the support, of the community because: (1) it supplies those ‘extra comforts’ which mean so much to the members of the lighting forces. (2) It is administered with complete honesty and very creditable efficiency (in the face, often, of difficult and rapidly changing situations). (3) The ‘comforts’ supplied are a real help to those ‘who receive them, and are much appreciated by them. “We hold that to resort to such methods as gambling, queen carnivals, endless sales and shop days is undesiraole because: (1) They stimulate undesirable characteristics such as the gambling spirit, and thirst for ’ I senseless excitement, local and per- ' i sonal jealousies, etc. (2) They call for expenditure (in these busy times) I of an enormous amount of needless ■ werk, energy and money on the part ! of a comparatively few public-spirited • people. (3) They compete unfairly ■ with legitimate and regular trade l ’ and business. 1 1 “We believe that the method ol 3 i direct giving is desirable because: (1) ’ It is 'so much more honest and worthv a way of meeting such a J worth-while appeal. (2) It is so mucn r better as an ‘economy proposition.’ '• so much less costly in effort and ’ cash, as a way of raising our quota i to the fund. (3) It places no unfair 1 burden on any individual or class. 3 (4) It leaves nothing but a feeling of - satisfaction and goodwill behind it ' “In view of this situation we call ■ upon you as citizens of Wanganui: 2 (1) Take the initiative and give of ’ your own accord. (2) Give thoughi- ; fully and generously and give. at 1 once. “The quota of the city area is 1 £9OOO. We could give this in one day 1 if we liked. Let us like!”
