SETTLING DISPUTES

MR. PARRY DEFENDS MR. WEBB. Wellington, March 21. “There are - only two ways of settling disputes or grievances. Ono is bv common sense and reason, and the other by the use of the gun,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr. Parry) in the House of Representatives yesterday, when referring to industrial troubles. Mr. Parry said he thought that the Minister of Labour (Mr. Webb) had one of the most difficult jobs in the Cabinet. He had used the common sense and reason method and had battled away and had been condemned for his attitude. The Minister of Labour was no quitter. He declared that there had not been as many strikes during the term of the present Government, over a period of five years as had been recorded under former Administrations. The loss of wages through strikes in 1914 amounted to £236,000; in 1923, £114.000; in 1936, £13,000; in 1937, £32.000; in 1938, £42.000: in 1939. £60,000; and in 1940, £28,000.
