FOR E.P.S. CONSTRUCTION

SUBSTITUTE MATERIALS TO BE USED COMMISSION ER'S STATEMENT (P.A.) Auckland. March 22. The use of substitute materials for concrete and brickwork in all E.P.S. construction work is indicated by Mr. James Fletcher, Commissioner for Defence Construction. He arrived in Auckland on Friday to meet the Mayor, the city engineer and architects and builders engaged on defence works. At a meeting with these Mr. Fletcher gave a general outline of defence construction programmes and their relation to the labour and materials available. Interviewed prior to his departure. Mr. Fletcher said that as a result of he was confident that all E.P.S. construction work in the Auckland district could and would be speeded up. Mr. Fletcher said cement would play a large part in main defence programmes. In the meantime its use is totally prohibited in all industries save the asbestos cement industry. Its use in private building is also prohibited. Drastic alterations will be necessary in the design and planning of all E.P.S. shelters. All such projects must be so designed that cement production would be available for more important war projects. Manufacturers of cement products must be prepared for a shutdown period of considerable duration. Men released from the works affected would be immediately absorbed on application to placement officers.
