NOTED LECTURER’S VISIT
; MR. s. A. BURNHAM. ‘'Wanganui is a wonderful city. I think your Centennial Winter Garden at the Virginia Lake reserve is one of the finest places I have seen anywhere in my trip round New Zealand, if not almost, anywhere in the world, lit is something you can be justly proud of.” In these terms Mr. S. A. Burnham. F.R.G.S., F.R.A.S.. noted lecturer and explorer, of England, who is visiting Wanganui in the course of a tour of New Zealand, expressed himself when asked his opinion of Wanganui. Mr. Burnham is in the midst of a world tour. He does not expect to reach his home in England for the Inext six years, as he has extensive I lectures to give in Australia, United [States of America, Canada, and West Indies. “New Zealand is truly a wonderful country. I consider the scenery in places is equal to anything I have seen in most countries I have visited in my wanderings over the world. You have such excellent variety, suited to all tastes, packed into such a comparatively small space in both islands, and most of it is so easily accessible. I have thoroughly enjoyed all I have seen so far.” Mr. Burnham has made six visits Io Palestine, Syria, Egypt and the Near East, all made during the years 1932 ito 1937. He has been at the scenes of excavation which have been carried out in the valley of Ur of the Chaldees, Babylon, Lacish, Thebes, Luxor Baalbeck and Petra. To-night, Mr. Burnham will lecture on Palestine, his subject being “The Light of Prophecy.”
