ACTION OFF MALAYA SUPPORTED London. March 12. Admiral Hart, at a Press conference, commented on the action of Sir Tom Phillips in taking the Prince of Wales and the Repulse into action against the Japanese off Malaya. He said that Sir Tom Phillips had been justified in the step he had takon, as a successful action might well have resulted in the saving of Singapore. Admiral Phillips took a great risk, hut it was a risk justified by the possibility of breaking up at its source the Japanese attack on Malaya. If he had been successful, the Japanese might have been prevented from landing in Malaya, and th*' whole Pacific situation have been altered. Referring to the U.S. As atu Fleet, Admiral Hart said that units had been successfully dispersed and were intact and in position which would enable th er io be of the greatest service in dealing with the situation in the Pacific and to take part in offensive operations.
