SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
1 REASSEMBLY OF CHILDREN OPPOSED. (P.A.) Christchurch, March 11. A telegram urging that pupils of the School for the Deaf at Sumner be not reassembled was sent to the Minister of Education to-day by the central committee of the Emergency Precautions Services after a meeting of the committee at which unanimous opposition to the reopening of schools was expressed. The chairman of the organising executive, Mr. W. Machin, said it would be nothing less than monstrous if deaf children were brought back to a position of danger. He thought it would be a good thin;: if the committee added its weight to a protest, which had already been sent to the Government by the Sumner Borough Council. The question was brought to the attention of the meeting by the Ma.\or of Sumner. Mr. J. E. Tait, who san. it was proposed to draft 140 chi. Iren back to the school. Mr. M. E. Lyons said it would be absurd and ridiculous to take the children from their homes In manv parts of New Zealand to assemble them in a place like Sumner. The homes of two of the pupils were north of Dargaville.
