BISCUIT MANUFACTURE

MOKE FOR THE FORCES (Press Assn.) Wellington, Jan. 20.

Mr. D. I. MacDonald, secretary of the Biscuit Manufacturers’ Association, stated to-day that biscuit manufacturers who had been engage:, on a Service biscuit contract for the last 10 months met in Christenurc/i last week-end to consider a request from the Food Controller tor a large increase in the contract. One of the Food Controller’s officers was present and explained fully the circumstances giving rise to the request, and the ! manufacturers concerned agreed to j reorganise their businesses to meet I the substantial production now rc- [ quired of them for war purposes. ' "This adjustment will be commenced immediately," said Mr. MacDonald, “and naturally means some I reduction in the varieties and quantities of biscuits that will be available for domestic consumption. However, the general public can rest assured that theie will be ample biscuits available to meet all normal domestic requirements. and except that certain varieties may disappear from tne market it is unlikely that the public will be greatly affected. "It has been further decided, however, that no biscuits will in future be put up in packets and beyond the small quantity of packeted biscuits now in the shops of retailers all biscuits will have in future to be bought loose. With the assistance of the workers in the industry, who have already materially assisted towards meeting the increased production oi the last 10 months, factory proprietors feel that the substantially increased volume of production now required can be obtained.
