ARRIVAL AT BATAVIA ACCOUNTS OF THE BLITZ ON THE ISLAND (Recd. 7.30 p m.) Batavia. Dec. 20. The Japanese again bombed Tprempa on Friday. There was little damage but the number of dead was increased to 65. A British evacuation ship, carrying 300 people, has arrived at Batavia from Penang. Graphic accounts of the blitz of the island were given by refugees. Sweeping over the island in mass formations, Japanese bombeir concentrated on Chinatown in an endeavour to upset the civilian morale. Hundreds who Ignored the warning sirens and failed to take shelter fell victims to streams of bullets, which spattered the straight, narrow streets. It was not until the third day of the attack that the Japanese met opposi-tion-three R.A.F. fighters—and at the fire from the Butterworth guns the enemy bombers then scattered without drooping bombs.
