TANKERS ATTACKED ONE SENDS AN S.O.S. According to the United Press enemy submarines attacked two American ships to-day off the Californian coast. An enemy submarine, described as “very big," came to the surface 2G miles off Cypress Point, near Santa Cruz. California, and fired eight she ts at an oil-tanker proceeding front Les Angeles to San Francisco. All the shots missed. The freighter Emidio sent out an S.O.S- off Cape Mendocino saying that it had “sustained a torpedo attack" by a submarine. (Recd. 10.3 p.ntJ Washington. Dec. 20. The Navy Department disclosed that enemy submarines have been operating off the Atlantic Coast. Emphasising the necessity for withholding weather reports, it revealed evidence that enemy submarines profited by at least one weather broadcast wherein temperatures of specific localities were given, from which deductions regarding high visibility were easily made.
