DISPERSAL SCHEME IN AUCKLAND
QUEEN STREET CLEARED IN 90 SECONDS (Press Assn.) Auckland, Dec. 18. Queen Street was cleared in 90 seconds after the siren sounded at 10 o'clock, and although many minor defects were observed, Auckland's first dispersal test was admirably’ carried out by the public and wardens. Although they were not told the actual time of the alarm many people had kept away’ from the business area during the likely period of the test. However, ‘there were sufficient pedestrians and vehicular traffic to provide a thorough test. With the first scream of sirens wardens ushered pedestrians to side streets leading to dispersal points, shops and business premises closed, and cars drew into kerbs. And after 90 seconds the only movement in Queen Street was that of wardens, auxiliary police, and auxiliary’ firemen. The chief warden, the Mayor. Mr. J. A. C. Allum, expressed satisfaction with the test. He said the next test would be on a larger scale and no warning would be given.
