FIRE CHIEF WAS ON THE JOB!
AUTOMATIC ALARM By a strange coincidence, when the automatic fire alarm in the "Chronicle” building summoned the Central Fire Brigade yesterday afternoon, the superintendent. Mr. N. M. Ross, was on the premises. It was the first occasion in his long years of service as a fireman that Superintendent Ross was able to tell the brigade when it arrived that he was "already on the job!” Two insurance agents were aiso in the building at tile time, making adjustments to policies! And the alarm was accidental! An innocent looking carpenter moved out to see where the tire was. ami seemed quite annoyed when they told him that he was responsible. He had been moving a piece of board and his saw had accidentally cut a piece of wire. That cut brought two engines hurrying through the main streets of the Back at the station the members of the brigade are still wondering whether "the chief” had a hand in the call-out, and whether it was in the nature of a test. Superintendent Ross, however, had been on a tour of inspection to check up on the guarding of buildings in the event of a war emergency.
