CASTLECLIFF HEADMASTER MR. YV. P. WILLIAMS' CAREER Relinquishing the headmastership of ihe Castlecliff School to-day lo take up his new appointment of the Keith Street School, Mr. W. P. Williams has had a notable career in the teaching service, mainly 'in Wanganui. ; He entered the service as a pupil teacher in October. 1904, at the Wanganui District High School, which was later the Victoria Avenue School and now th< Intermediate School. Later Mr. Williams was sole teacher at Coal Creek, in‘the Feilding district, at |T<»i Toi, on the Main Trunk line, and [at Mcremerv. near Havvera. In 1910 M’ W ms iis apj omte ian assistant at the Haw era District High School, and three years later, in 191 I, he returned to Wanganui' a-s first 'assistant at the Gonville School. v.h ch then consisted of the four 'wooden rooms now standing on the hill facing Koromiko Road. He remained at Gonville throughout the years of development which saw the school progress to top grade with some pupils. In 1922 Mr. Williams was appointed first assistant a: Victoria Avenue School, and four years later he became the first headmaster of Taw hero School, where he remained for thirteen years. Throughout this long periofl ne carried out a g’rat deal of work in the improvement of the school’s environs, and to n’m is due much of the credit for the fine surroundings which have made this a model school. In 1939 he was appointed headmaster at Castlecliff. In activities outsnle the schoolroom Mr. Williams has always been very busy. For the past 26 years he has been secretary of the Wanganu: iPrimary Schools’ Rugby Vnion. and the part he has played in arranging the quadrangular Rugby tournaments has been no small one. For the past twenty years he has been secretary of the Wanganui branch of the iX«w Zealand Educational Institute, and he is also secretary of the Marton Executive of the five branches of the N.Z.E.1.. covering the Wanganui Education Board district. Mr. Williams is also a past president of the Wanganui Head Teachers’ Association and of the Wanganui Primary (Schools’ Athletic Association. In (Swimming and life-saving Mr Williams maintains a keen interest, and he is acting-president of the Wanganui branch of the Royal Life-Saving Society.
