CHRISTMAS MAILS
DEPLETED POSTAL STAFFS EARLY POSTING IMPERATIVE Depleted staffs in mail-room and postmen's branches may result in inevitable delays during the busy Christmas season, stated Mr. D. R. McCowatt, chief postmaster at Wanganui, yesterday. First-class mail matter such as letters may not be delayed much, though the fact that fewer trains may run will probably result in schedules not being observed. Mr. McCowatt suggested that people who are sending Christmas parcels or packets which are regarded as second-class mail matter, should post them within the first two days of next week if they want to be sure of delivery to the addressees before Christmas. "It may seem like a drastic step, but it is that the general public will appreciate the position,’ said Mr. McCowatt. It was also announced that, commencing on Monday next December 15, postmen’s deliveries in the residential areas will he reduced to one daily. In the meantime, it is not proposed to curtail deliveries in the business areas. Posting boxes which are at present cleared by postmen in the course of their deliveries will he cleared once daily as from Monday next. “The heavy demands which are generally made on postmen during the Christmas rush may cause, under the one-a-day deliveries, delays which might have heen not so much in evidence under a system of two deliveries daily,’’ concluded Mr. McCowatt.
