KING’S BIRTHDAY

FORTY-SIX TO-MORROW King George VI will celebrate his 46ih birthday to-morrow. He was born on December 14. 1895 at Sandringham, and was trained for Ihe Navy. He was present at the Ba'tle of Jutland in 1916. and in 1919 became a captain in the Royal Air Force. On April 26. 1923, he married. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, daughter of the Earl of Strathmore. In 1927. as the Duke and Duchess of York, they loured Australia and New Zealand. In the course of that tour they \isitei Wanganui, where they received a memorable reception on Cook's Gardens.

In December. 1936 the Duke ascended the Throne on the abdication of his brother. King Eduard VIII. King George ua< crowned in Westminster Abbey on May 12. 1937.
