BRIGHT GARDEN PARTY

ST. JOHN'S HIIJ, PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE. MORE THAN 1100 RAISED. Saturday proved a fortunate da;, for the St. John's Hill Patriotic Committee's garden party, held in the ' beautiful grounds of the residence of j Mr. and Mrs. F. 13. Wylds, Brassey , Road. After very wet weather the ' day was line and all the well-laid I plans of the organising comniittlee.’ were able to he carried out. Giant garden umbrellas were set about the lawn and lent additional colour to the scene. The garden, with its flower beds in a riot of colour, the beautiful shrubs and trees made a delightful place for the party, and visitors availed themselves of the privilege of admiring the gardens. Stalls were set up in attractive corners of the grounds and tea was served on one end ot the lawn, near the house. The function was opened by Mr. H. M. Keesing, chairman of Hie Wanganui City Patriotic Committee, who paid a warm tribute to the St. John's Hill Committee and praised the work of the president, Mrs. W. Russell, and of the energetic secretary. Mrs. A. Hatrick. He expressed appreciation of the attitude of Mr. and Mrs. Wylds in generously lending their home and grounds for the occasion. Posies were presented to Mrs. Keesing. Mrs. Russell and Mrs. Hatrick. by Mrs. S. G. Millen, also to the mothers and wives of St. John s Hill airmen and men who are ser * tg, and have served, in the fighting forces overseas I The stalls were all filled with good things to. buy. while at the Christmas] gift stall visitors found an assortment, of particularly attractive articles. The j stalls were quickly depleted of goods and the children could not resist the large bran tub, for they received good value for their money. There was a large number present, and the effort realised a sum of more than £lOO. Selections played by the Welling-ton-West Coast Regimental Band added to the pleasure of the after-] noon. Sendyk; ice creams and drinks, Misses Rachel Sievers, Cushla Wylds and Joyce Whitaker; bran tub. Miss H. Jones and Mrs. Spencer Smith. Mesdames Wylds and R. E. T. Hewat were in charge of the afternoon tea. assisted by Mesdames Barriball. Tremewan, S. Newsome, N. Bancks. Godfrey Payne, I. Bassett, Hastings. Don Bassett, N. Fulton, Misses McNab, D. Howie and Margaret Edwards. On display was a monogrammed quilt to be sent to the Middle East. Made by Mrs. F. W. Lock, the quilt was embroidered in hundreds of names of people who had paid sixpence for the privilege of having their names inscribed thus helping the war effort. The owner of the quilt donated a prize for a competition in connection with the bed covering. Competitions were won as follows: Chilli's smock. Mrs. S. Handlev: guessing doll's name (Edward Kenl>. Mrs. Douglas Earle; stockings. Mr. Stuart Story; Un biscuits. Mrs. 11. Sharpe; rug. Mrs. M. Laird; dinner, Mrs. F. Lock: cake. Mrs. Cleator: box chocolates. Horace Gilford; baby's frock.
