FORMER WANGANUI BOY COI RAGE AND DETERMINATION DISPLAYED An officral statement from Wellington says that a former Wanganui boy in the R.A.F. has been decoratefl. He is Sergeant Jeffrey George West. R.N.Z.A.F.. son of Mrs. C. S. West, anfl tho late Mr. H. West, anfl the award is the Distinguished Flying Medal. The citation accompanying the award says that Sergeant West has participated in 34 operational sorties ever enemy territory, and at all time? has displayed courage and determination. He has destroyed at least two enemy planes. Sergeant West was born in Palmerston North in 1912, and was educated at the Hamilton High School, where he was prominent in sport, representing the school in Rugby, cricket, and hockey. Later he represented Waikato at hockey and cricket. The late Mr. West was a traveller in Wanganui before going to Hamilton to become dispenser at the Hamilton Public Hospital. Sergeant West spent his early hoyhood in Wanganui.
