“LADIES’ NIGHT”
GUESTS OF SAVAGE CLUB ENTERTAINMENT AND DANCING. Looked forward to as one of the main events of the season, “ladies’ night” of the Wanganui Savage Club, held on Saturday, was a successful and jolly gathering. The club hall, which represents the interior of a very realistic Maori meeting house, was crowded with members and their women-folk ana friends, all in festive mood, and it was evident from the trouble taken by the “Savages” to provide an amusing programme that they do take real pleasure in entertaining the ladies. A delightful programme filled the first half of the evening and a dance followed. An innovation was the wearing of ribbons with badges by the members. The addition of a bar to the decoration denoted the number of years of membership. At 9 p.m. silence was observed, followed by the singing of “There'll Always be an England.” After the march in of the Savages an opening “Ode to the Ladies," composed by Savage C. S. Brown, was sung-. The club is fortunate in having a fine orchestra and in the several numbers rendered it was heard to much advantage. The installation of Rangitira EricLind was carried out by immediate past chief, Savage R. Dobbs, with a humorous proclamation finishing with verses composed by E. H. Poynter. Acknowledgment was made in a witty manner by Rangitira Lind, who expressed the great pleasure of the hapu in welcoming the .wahines. The audience responded enthusiastically to the items presented as follows:—Songs, Mr. J. D. Tizard; duo, Messrs. F. Killeen and Kidd; duets in character, with topical hits, Messrs. W. Brown and W. Hawkes; elocutionary item, “Levinsky’s Wedding,” Mr. A. Newrick; an hilariously funny ballet, arranged by Savage R. Tullock and party; and last, but by no means least "a mannequin parade” which caused peals of laughter. In borrowed plumes the Savages taking part presented various sessions, including “night attire,” "foundations," "gardening suits.” “something for the kitchen,” “three-piece play suits,” “golf wear,” “dinner wear” and finally a wedding group. One or two “mannequins,” with slim figures, gave a perfect interpretation of the walk and mannerisms of the professional types, especially when displaying play suits and evening wear. Savage S. Kidd was the commentator. The items were thoroughly enjoyed. Supper was served in the adjoining hall and dancing was indulged in until the midnight, hour. Tuneful music was provided by the New Gaiety Orchestra. Among those present were: —Mr. and Mrs. E. Lind. Mrs. C. S. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Benson. Mr. and Mrs. F. Bloomfield, Mr. and Mrs. R.
