“JUNIOR VOLUNTEER” BOOKLET HOW TO AVOID AND PREVENT ACCIDENTS Wanganui -school teacn-rs an.; senior pupils who have been selected lor training as road sale;;, patrois have been issued by the Automobile Association (Auckland) through the Wanganui Association with a booklet called "The Junior Safety Volunteer." It was compiled by the Auckland Association. The junior safety volunteer is expected to know how to avoid and prevent street accidents by removing their causes, thereby increasing the safety of the streets. The booklet emphasises many road safety rules, including where to walk, how to cross intersections and busy streets, wheie to play games, and how to ride a bicycle safely by using the proper signals and seeing that the bicycle is in good order and not liable to cause an accident as a result of disrepair. The booklet gives special instructions to school "safety committees.” which are to be considerate at all times of the safety of all pupils, to assist the teachers in the safety campaign and to help spread the educational message of safety and accident prevention.
School patrols appointed from among the senior pupils are also given useful advice in the booklet. Their duties are to assist school children in the safe crossing of the road at the school entrance, to supervise the conduct of pupils walking to ana from their homes and to prevent dangerous piacliees; to report to the head teacher or safety committee any pupil who. after being cautioned, persists in acting in a foolish or dangerous manner and to deal with all problems of school traffic.
