WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
MEETING AT KAITOKE There was a good attendance of members at the August meeting of the Kaitoke Women's Institute. The vicepresident, Mrs. Bonner, presided. The annual council conference report and balance-sheet were read. Birthday invitations were received from Mosston, Kai Iwi, and Makirikin. The motto for the month was given by Mrs. Service. To the newly-formed Westbourne Institute a letter is to be sent to convey Kaitoke’s greetings and best wishes. A demonstration on “ways with ribbon" was very interesting. Hostesses were Mesdames Caldwell, Leineweber and Anderson. Competitions: Vinegar cake, Miss Aitken 1, Mrs. Garner, senr., 2, Mrs. Anderson 3; worked apron, Mrs. Service 1, Mrs. Campbell 2, Mrs. Gillies 3; violets, Mrs. H. Garner 1, Mrs. Scott 2. Members are reminded of the “bring-and-buy" stall, for federation funds, also federation visit next month. Competitions will be: Collection of sweets, worked handkerchief with hand-made edging. The annual
spring flower show will also be held. Hostesses will be: Mrs. Pritchard, Mrs. Hunt, and Miss Pritchard.
WESTMERE MEETING The August meeting ot the above institute was held on Tuesday, with a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the “Ode to Friendship ’ and "God Defend New Zealand,” followed by tiie aspirations. The president welcomed alt visitors, especially those from the Air Force Relations Committee, also a new member, Mrs. Stevens.
Motions of sympathy with the relatives of the late Miss M. McCullough, and of Mr. George Trillo, who died on active service, were carried in silence. Miss Edith Smith continued the Golden Thread of great composers, with a talk on the life of Robert Schumann, playing several of his compositions at intervals during her talk, which was greatly appreciated. As an introduction to the speaker for the afternoon, Mrs. Ccrliss sang “Lords of the Air.” Mrs. S. G. Millen then gave a most interesting talk on the work of the Air Force Relations Committee.
This month the institute is working for the Air Force, and as a result of the competitions 27 pairs of mitten.-: and a quantity of bran biscuits were handed to the A.F.R. Committee. The winners of the competitions were: Mittens, heavyweight, Mrs. Z. Smith 1, Mrs. Flynn 2; lightweight, Mrs. Edwards 1, Mrs. Cooper 2; bran biscuits. Mrs. Morgan 1 and 3, Mrs. Laird 2.
A mannequin parade by tne Westwere and Brunswick members of Miss Betty Dewe's dressmaking classes was held.
Hostesses for tire afternoon were Mesdames E. Prince, Carwindinc, E Murray, Misses B. Penwarden and A. Crawly. The meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
