Rowing on the Nile.

In a letter to his parents, who live in Wanganui, Lance-Corporal Martin Clay, who is with the New Zealand Division in the Middle East, refers to the great interest New Zealanders take in rowing. He makes special mention of a race which was won by a crew stroked by T. G. Fowler, of Waitara, former Taranaki representative front row Rugby forward. This crew also included R. P. Hansen, son of Mr. E. Hansen, chief Government meat grader at the Imlay Works, Wanganui. Lance-Corporal Clay stated that in a race with a Greek crew the New Zealanders just managed to win, and it was his opinion that, if the course had been a length or so longer, the Greeks would have won.
