ENJOYABLE CONCERT

ORCHESTRA OF 50 PLAYERS i| , One of the largest orchestral combinations heard in Wanganui for a : number of years performed in the Opera House on Sunday night, when a concert was arranged by the entertainment committee of the Home Guard. Mr. H. J. Trussell's orchestra, which normally consists of about 30 players, was augmented to 5u for lhc occasion and the high standard of the music was greatly appreciated by a large audience. The programme was well arranged, and the area commander of the Home Guard, Major R. D. Hardie, D. 5.0.. subsequently expressed hi:; appreciation to all who had assisted. He alro complimented the orchestra and artists, and thanked the staff of the Opera House who had given their services. “Blue Danube” was sung by Mrs. Russell Scoular with orchestral accompaniment, her recall lumber being “One Day When We wore Young.” Mr. Allan Brown sang “i’he Deathless I Army” and “Land of Hope urei Glory.” | Two elocutionary items by Mrs. Allan I •Brown were “The Telegram” and! “Packing.” “When the Anzacs March Again," I composed by Mr. Frank Wilkie an I I arranged by Mr. C. Trussell, was ( sung by the composer. A zylophone, item by Mr. Barry Trussell was also well received. Items played by the orchestra, ■ which received warm applause, in- J eluded the marches “London Bridge” | (Coates) and “Stars and Stripes” | ((Sousa), the selection “Poet and Peasant," and the popular number. “Till the Lights of London Shine | Again.” The concert was successful from ■ every point of view and it is probable that Mr. Trussell’s augmented orchestra will be again heard in Wanganui.
