BOBBY CALF TRADE

GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY OF TWO SHILLINGS MISCONCEPTION CLEARED UP Because of publication of a Press Association message from Wellington, in Friday's issue, farmers in the Wanganui district obtained an impression that bobby calves am worth on’y two shillings a head delivered at works or abattoirs. This is not correct. The Government pays a subsidy of two shillings a head and. with the subsidy, a calf is w. rth about 7s or Ss nt the works.

The Wangaehu (Southern) Calf Pool is advising its suppliers Hint they must have a proper calf pen at th* farm gate, with a Ing attached with name and init’rls thereon. This is ncce.-: c ary so that carriers’ dockets mav bo correctly made out. Also a small white flag must be displayed t • draw carrier's attention wh"n calves are penned. This also apnlics to the North Wanganui Calf Pool. It is also requested that care he taken to sec that there is no barbel wire or anything likely to injure the skin which is the most valuable part of the calf ot present, tn the event of those conditions not being nttendol to, the calves may not be collected. Care of Calves A circular has just been received from the Marketing Department, stating that complaints have been received of unnecessary cruelty creeping into the operations. The department stresses the necessity for complying with the regulations with regard to feeding and care of calves prior to leaving the farm. If the situation deteriorates, appointment of inspectors may be necessary. but Ihe department realises that it is probably only necessary to draw* suppliers’ attention to the necessity for feeding and care of calves and obviating cruelty where possible.
