MARTON NOTES

MARTON JUNCTION WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The Marlon Junction W.I. held their monthly 7 meeting on Wednesday, August 6. Owing to the absence of Mrs Franke (the president), the chair was taken by Mrs. Davison. Proceedings opened, with the “Ode to Friendship,” followed by the Creed. A prayer was then offered by Mrs. Low. A hearty welcome was extended to all present, especially Mrs. K. Stoker, tutor of the drama branch of the adult education scheme. Apologies were received from Mesdames Adams. Aldrich, Downs, Dunn, Fitzgerald, Gregory, Say'ers, Humphrey, Black, Moore, Kendrick, Watts, Bruce, Barton, Miles. The motto was given by Mrs. S. Lewis. The resignation of Mrs. S. Bailey was received with regret, she being a very' active member of the drama circle. It was decided to ask Miss Collins, of Nga Tawa College, to speak at an evening meeting in October, the date, etc., to be decided at the September meeting. Miss Stocker then gave a short address on the work of the adult education scheme in relation to drama. That her talk was much appreciated was shown by the number of members who met Miss Stocker after the meeting for a further discussion. Two delightful solos were given by Mrs. Bailey, who was heartily applauded. The ever-welcome afternoon tea was then served, after which Mr. F. Lawson, of St. John Ambulance Brigade, gave a —y interesting and instructive talk on "First Aid,” for which he received a hearty vote of thanks. Competition winners were: Soldier’s knitted scarf, Mrs. Mathews, Mrs. Davison, Mrs. Mitchell. Pot of marmalade: Mrs. S. Lewis, Miss Trueman, Mrs. R. Lewis. The competitions for September are (1) Babies knitted pilches, in stocking stitch and three-ply wool; (2) six pikelets. A demonstration of pastry making is also to be given. The hostesses for September are Mesdames Sicely (chief), Ness, Steere, Winchcombe, Winstanley, F. Poppe. Young, H. Poppe. The singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting.
