RICCARTON CARD

C.J.C. Grand National Fixture STEEPLECHASE FIELD PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY The Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting will open at Riccarton to-day, when the Grand National Steeplechase ahd the Winter Cup will be the principal events on an attractive card. The Grand National Hurdles, the third “leg” of a popular treble, will be run on Thursday, and the meeting will conclude on Saturday next. Win-and-place betting operates at Riccarton, and the track may be heavy. With a field of a dozen for the Enfield Steeples, the opening event promises Io be interesting, though last year seven of the eleven runners fell and another ran off. Son and Heir impressed at Awapuni but may be extended by Ruling Star and Surcoat, [ Provision has been made to run the, Cashmere Plate in two divisions if more than 30 of the 35 acceptors line] up. Renarde and Silver Ball, winners of the two divisions in the Maiden I Stakes at the Christchurch Hunt I Club meeting, appear to have the best | chances, with Espionage, Sir Gundi. Gunga Din and Lord Dundas also sure to have friends. Grand National Hurdles candidates win have a chance for a pipe-opener in the Jumpers’ Flat, in which The Dozer, King Rey and Esperance Bay appeal. A great field of sprinters is to contest the Paparua Handicap, though several are also in the Winter Cup. If Sunny Knight takes on this race he may be favourite, but Wings of Song and Waitoru have'credentials. The field for the Grand National Steeplechase is far from strong, and there is nothing so outstanding as was the case when Padishah and Clarion Call won. Slayer, second last year, has his chance, and he should be improved as a result of his Homeby Steeples run. Ballybrit is consistent and Erination has a plodder's chance. Bridegroom has come into favour as a result of his schooling displays following an enforced let-up. Chat and Astral Flame appeal further down. Dauber was scratched on Friday. Slayer and Bridegroom are preferred. The Trial Hurdles last year was a good line for the Grand National, as Limbohm won both events. Three in form are Noko, Fundy' and Gay Boa. Even with the field reduced to 22 the Winter Cup presents the usual problem. Gladynev, Centrepoise, Gayest Son. Sunny Knight, St. Cloud. Black Majesty, Boloyna, Algerian and Treasurer appear to comprise the

most likely division, and the favourites may include Gayest Son, St. Cloud. ' the Sunny Knight—Black Majesty bracket and Boloyna. The Avonhead Handicap has drawn three more than the safety number for the seven-furlong barrier. Anything can happen in such a large field, but Ann Mie, Jolly Time and Greenbank appear a likely trio. The following appeal in their respective engagements: — Enfield Steeplechase.—Son and Heir, Surcoat, Ruling Star. Cashmere Plate. Renarde. Silver Ball, Espionage, Gunga Din. Jumpers' Flat. The Dozer, King ' Rey, Esperance Bay. Paparua Handicap. Sunny Knight, Wings of Song, Waitoru. G.N. Steeplechase. Slayer, Bridegroom. Ballybrit. Trial Hurdles—Noko, Fundy Bay, Gay Boa. Winter Cup.—Gayest Son, St. Cloud, Boloyna (or Sunny Knight— Slack Majesty bracket). Avonhead Handicap.—Anne Mie, Jolly Time, Greenbank.
