RUGBY FOOTBALL TAIHAPE v. WAIOURU A Rugby match between a Taihape representative team and a side from the Waiouru military camp was play- l ed on the Oval Domain, Taihape, on I Saturday afternoon and resulted in a | victory for the local team by eight I points to live. Larsen (first five-eighth) played an I outstanding game for Taihape, giving i a polished exhibition in both attack ' and defence. His opposite number, : McKinley, was the pick of the army I backs. Payne played well behind the i Taihape scrum, while Chase, Hekenui, | Steedman and Haitana impressed at I times. In the maroon forwards A. ■ McDonald, Howie, Bremner. Reeves ; and Henery caught the eye. : The army team lacked combination, i having never played together before, whereas the great majority of theTaihape team played a fortnight ago in a patriotic match. Castle was the ! pick of the army pack, while the Wai- I ouru three-quarter line, consisting o'. I Leatherland, Treseder (centre) and | Hill, showed promise. The place-kick- | ing of the Waiouru team was weak, some “sitters” being missed. A big parade,; however, was held on Thursday even- i ing at Taihape, Colonel Powles, camp commandant at Waiouru, being present. All companies in the Taihape i district were represented at tile route j march through the streets of the, town, led by the Waiouru Military ! Pipe Band. Instruction in trench | mortars and Lewis and Vickers guns j was given in the Town Hall alter the march.
