“SCORCHED EARTH’’
NEW CHINESE POLICY APPLIED ALONG BORDER London, July 31. Quoting a report from Saigon, the Japanese news agency said to-day that General Chiang Kai-shek has decided on a “scorched earth” policy in the provinces adjoining Indo-China which are threatened by the Japanese advance. 'The message declared that the Chinese leader ha.> ordered the des. ruction of all bridges and communications on a 20-mile coastal stretch next to the Indo-China border. The Japanese Press continues to utter threats to the Netherlands East Indies and Thailand. The Japan Times advises the Dutch to come to a frosh agreement with Japan, and declares that Thailand should fall into line wiih Indo-China. Answering this demand, the Thai Consul-General in Singapore is quoted assaying that Thailand will not g*uU bases to any nation.
