ENGAGING ENEMY IN BATTLE

RUSSIAN REPORT (Reed. 11.40 p.m.) Rugby, July 31. A Russian communique says: “Our forces yesterday continued to engage the enemy in battle in the Novorzhev and Nevel directions, with particularly strenuous battles in the SmolenskJitomir direction. There were no major operations on the remaining fronts.

“Operating in close co-operation with our land forces, our aircraft con tinued blows against enem.» tank and infantry units, and aircraft on enemy aerodromes, besides bombing Sulina, where big fires occurred as the result of the bombardment. According to incomplete data our aircraft destroyed nine German planes on Tuesday. Our losses were five.—B.O.W.
