I interpretating the Netherlands East I Indies freezing of Japanese assets as undisguisingly rejecting Japan's pro-! posal for co-operation and also indi-i eating Dutch participation in the] encircling of Japan. . | It says: ‘‘Japan must now leave j nothing undone in order to cope with i immediate issues arising from the | Dutch action and at the same time undertake to smash the evil dream of j Dutch authorities wearing the skin of | the British lion, and the feathers of the American eagle to defy Japan." | The newspaper Hochi Shimbun de-1 dared: "It should thoroughly be I j borne in mind by hostile countries. | such as Britain, the United States land the Netherlands East Indies, that the accomplishment of Japan’s South Sea Co-prosperity Sphere is an historic and absolute task, for the attainment of which Japan is firmly and immutably determined to break through any disturbances.” The Hochi urges calm reflection on the part of the nations concerned of I the evil influences cf their attitude toward Japan. The Miayako Shimbun, asserting that the war is spreading eastward, said the United States is resorting to threats to Japan without taking “direct action" because, "firstly, the country is not fully ready to fight | Japan; secondly, it thinks bluff still ! can be played to Japan.” | Japan froze Dutch Government, I Dutch Indies and Hongkong assets. The Information Board spokesman, ’ Mr. Ishii, said that Nanking likewise | would freeze their credits. He added he was unable to disclose whether I Japan desires an agreement with I Thailand similar to the joint defence I pact with Indo-China.—U.P.A.
