RETAILERS’ STAFF EFFORT

NEARLY £lOOO RAISED LADY-IN-WAITING TO THE AIR FORCE QUEEN One of the keenest competitions conducted during the Wanganui Patriotic Queen Carnival took place between the staffs of the bigger, and many of the small, retail firms in the city. It was conducted with the object of finding a lady-in-waiting to the Air Force Queen. Miss Margaret Brown, and was based on Ihe task of raising the most money. The staff which, on a proportionate basis could raise the most money had the right Io nominate the lady-in-waiting. McKenzie's. Ltd., won. and Miss Gwen Brandon has been chosen lady-in-wait-ing. Nearly £lOOO was raised by the effort. To overcome the unfairness which would have been created by a big staff competing with a smaller one. the competition was arranged so that, the bigger staffs had to raise more pro rata. McKenzie’s, however. raised the greatest amount. Results were: -

Total . . £914 0 4 “A wonderful effort ’’ wrote Mr. F. J. Hill, chairman of the Air Force Queen Committee, in a letter to each of the firms concerned. In addition to the amount stated many of the small retailers contributed, the whole competition being entirely a staff effort.
