VICE-REGAL Their Excellencies, the GovernorGeneral, Sir Cyril Newall. and Lady Newall, accompanied by Captain C. J. Holland-Martin, and Wing-Com-mander H. C. Bevan, A.D.C.’s, left Wanganui at 11.30 a.m. yesterday after their first official visit to the city. Before their departure from Foster’s Hotel they were farewelled by the Mayor of Wanganui, Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., and the town clerk, Mr. C. R. White. »Sir Cyril Newall went to the R.N.Z.A.F. station, Ohakea, and Lady Newall travelled to Wellington direct.
Mr. W. J. Gardner, manager of the Wanganui Harbour Board, has been appointed secretary of the Harbour Boards’ Association and Union of Employers, with headquarters at Wellington.
The death has occurred of Mr. William John Connell, of Waipu, aged 87. Mr. Connell was born in Ireland and came to Zealand when 20 years of age. He entered the teaching profession and taught in Auckland before going to Whangarei. He was a foundation member of the Waipu Masonic JbOdge. He leaves an adult family.
Mrs. Bessie MrKinlay, Wellington, producer of the Wanganui Patriotic Queen Carnival Coronation, which is to take place next Wednesday night, arrived in Wanganui last night, and rehearsals are Io begin immediately. Miss Mollie Rodin, supervisor of costume, has also arrived and is accompanied by her mother. They are staying at Foster's Hotel.
The death of Mr. John Al< xander C.M.G., senior partner of the legal him of Alexander, Bennett and Warnock, former M.L.C., and one oi Auckland’s most widely-known citizens, occurred on Tuesday night. Mr. Alexander married in 19G5 a daughter of the late Mr. J. W. Walker, of Thames, and is surv.vcU by his wife and on-
son. His mother, Mrs. M. J. Alexana?r, ot Auckland, also survives him.
A direct descendant cf Hone Hoke, the famous warlike chief, among whose exploits figured the cutting down of the flagstaff at Tororareka, Mrs. H. Dargaville, of Kaikohe, has died at the age of 68. Mrs. Dargaville, whose Maori name was Henare Mikara, was born in Kaikonc and lived there all her life. Three of her grandchildren, Winnie, John uul Peter Smith, arc well known in tennis circles. Mrs. Dargaville is survived by her husband and live daughters.
