THE FARMERS AND MEAT EXPORTS

"pHE wave of discontent which is rising throughout the Dominion against the ineptitude of the Meat Producers’ Board, is rightly finding its expression in resolutions of the Farmers’ Union branches. The Interprovincial Conference of the Farmers’ Union, held yesterday at Palmerston North, was a conference of delegates, and comprised men of above average ability and knowledge. They are practised in public discussion and have bestowed much deliberate thought upon the subjects to which they addressed themselves in conference. Of more than usual importance was the resolution which was passed condemning the present method of electing the members of the Meat Board by electoral college, and pronouncing in favour of the ward system. Another important and unanimous resolution was that which recommended to the Government that Mr. Sam S. Timbs be appointed a Government nominee on the Meat Board. These resolutions were carried unanimously after Mr. T. A. Dunean, the chairman of the Meat Board, had interjected freely—perhaps too freely—while Mr. Timbs was demonstrating his processing- method and was addressing the conference, and after Mr. Dunean had put forward his own apologia for the Meat Board. The Interprovincial Conference, therefore, came to its unanimous decisions after havingheard the ablest defender of the- Meat Board’s policy—or want of policy. The Int-erprovineial Conference also unanimously recommended that Mr. Timbs be invited to demonstrate and discuss his processing methods before the Central Executive of the Farmers’ Union in Wellington. Tn view of the widespread discontent with the Meat Board and the general support forthcoming for Mr. Timbs, the Central Executive could hardly do otherwise than extend an invitation to the man who has proved by his foresight his appreciation of the nature of the present problem confronting the meat producers of the Dominion,
