SHORTAGE OF WOOLLEN GOODS LIKELY
PRODUCTION IN N.Z. MILLS MUST BE MADE TO DO MORE LARGE QUOTA FOR ARMY (Press Assn.) Wellington, May 27. "New Zealand has never been selfsupporting in supplies of woollen yarns, and lately we have been drawing some supplies from Australia.” said the Minister of Industries, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, to-day.
"The position outlined by cable from Australia yesterday was known to the Government, and arrangeJnents have been in train for some time designed to increase not only our domestic production of yarns, but also of woollen piece goods and blankets in order to minimise any shortage that may develop. The future action of the Government depends on what success is attained in the effort to increase production. "The woollen mills to-day are supplying large quantities of piece goods, underwear, socks and blankets for the armed forces, in addition to lhe maintenance of our most essential civil needs. They are also endeavouring t.o provide a small quota for the needs of the Imperial and allied forces.”
(A Melbourne message yesterday stated that in future there will be no woollen goods available for civilian needs in Australia. All yarn produced is needed to clothe the troops.)
