VICTORIA LEAGUE

ANNUAL MEETING There was a large attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Wanganui branch of the Victoria League held yesterday afternoon in the Women’s Club room-, Broadway Buildings. Mrs. N. R. Bain (president) presided and welcomed all presenl. Bowls of hydrangeas and marigolds made bright decoration in the reception room. Proceedings opened with the singing of the National Anthem. Miss K. Armstrong (secretary) read the minutes and Mr. A. G. Cross (treasurer) presented the financial statement. A survey of the work carried out during the year was made by the president. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Sympathy was expressed to the relatives of three foundation members who had passed on during the year, namely Mrs. Bruce, Mrs. Willord, and Mrs. Gilbert Pearce. Also the heartfelt sympathy in the loss of Miss Gertrude Drayton and other memebrs of the staff during a London air raid, which destroyed the King George and Queen Elizabeth Club. Mrs. Bain said the branch felt that it had a great deal to be thankful for in having the privilege of meeting Miss Drayton personally during her visit to this Dominion in 1936. Prior to her visit she had endeared herself by her wonderful letters and keen interest in the league. All were deeply grateful for the interest she took m the members of the three armed services who have been on duty in Great Britain. As a mark of respect all stood in silence. Miss Betty Horsley, president of the Young Contingent, presented her annual report. Bouquets, given by Miss Higginson, were presented to Mis. Bain, Miss Armstrong and Miss Horsley.

In passing a vote of thanks to lb l ' president for her excellent work and comprehensive report of the activities during the year, Mr. A. G. Cross paid a tribute to her for her helpfulness, tact and courtesy. He spoke of the way in which she had faithfully carried out the duties of the league and wished her a successful year. In replying, Mrs. Bain said that it was the wonderful help of the committee and members that, had helped to make her work pleasant and successful. Mr. Cross also paid a tribute to the work of the Young Contingent, which, he said, was an important part of the organisation. He praised the report given by Miss Horsley and wished them a happy and successful year. Miss Horsley suitably replied. Mrs. Bain was unanimously reelected to the office of president. The vice-presidents were ..re-elected, Miss Stanford being elected in place of Miss Gibbons, who retired. The council was also re-elected. The one vacancy was filled by the appointment of Mrs. M. N. Campbell. A most enjoyable programme had been arranged and the delightfully rendered items were greatly appreciated. Those contributing to the programme were Miss Shirley Gilbert, who played pianoforte solos, Mrs. Leo Campion, who sang two songj, accompanied on the piano by her daughter Miss Shirley Campion; Miss Julie Werry and Mrs. J. L. Barriball, who also contributed two songs. Miss N. Gamman playing for the former and Mrs. J. W. Browne for Mrs. Barriball. Afternoon tea was served.
