FIRE IN NELSON HOSPITAL
THE OLD WOODEN BLOCK PATIENTS IN ADJOINING WARDS EVACUATED (Press Assn.) Nelson, May 7. Fire damaged portion of the old wooden block of the Nelson Public Hospital to-day. The outbreak occurred in the upstairs storerooms above the isolation block which- was occupied by several patients. All the patients in the isolation and adjoining ward were removed safely from the building.
Despite a strong south-westerly wind the brigade made a good save, confining the fire to the er<«ern end of the building. Members of the fire section of the Emergency Precautions Scheme, in action for the first lime, gave valuable assistance.
The main hospital was not threatened but the wards wore tilled with, heavy smoke. However, there was no confusion or alarm. The hospital staff used emergency fire-fighting equipment. which assisted in keeping the flames in check until the arrival of the brigade.
