TRIBUTE TO LADY NEWALL

GOWN OF ICE-BLUE SLIPPER SATIN The vociferous applause which greeted Their Excellencies, ths Gov-ernor-General and Lady Newall upon their arrival in the Town Hall on Monday evening for the civic reception held in their honour was evidence of the gratitude felt by the people of Wellington lor the great service Sir Cyril has rendered to the Empire and their consciousness of the honour done to this Dominion in his appointment as Governor-General, states the Evening Post. The obvious increase, in the volume of the applause as Lady Newall walked at the head of the official party down the red-car-peted aisle through the hall and up on to the platform was, however, a spontaneous and personal tribute to Eady xkewall herself. She looked so very gracious and charming and was oeautifully dressed in a gown of iceolue slipper satin encrusted at the neckline with crystal and worn with a lull-length coat of burgundy moire silk, the wide lapels being faced with blue satin to match the gown. Both coat ana gown had long, sweeping trains. She had bee presented witn a large bouquet or pink begonias ano carnations, and these she carried and afterwards held as she sat on the platform. The hall presented an impressive scene witn Air Force personnel seated in the tiered organ lort and flags and dark red zinnias and ferns decorating the stage and baskets of gladioli hanging against the lace of the balcony. in the large audience were many men in uniform and others wearing service decorations. The Mayoress, Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop, was dressed in a flesh-pink satin gown and a long white coat, Mrs. Humphrey Bevan and Miss Walton were in the vice-regal party. Mrs. Bevan wore a long black velvet coat over a floral gown, and Miss Walton was wearing a gown of violet silk crepe and a rur cape. Over a black lace dinner gown Mrs. Peter Fraser, wife of the Prime Minister, was wearing a short tailored brown beaver jacket, and Lady Myers, wife of the Chief Justice, wore a wine and gold lame gown and a fur coat.
