GRANTS TO NATIVE PUPILS THREE WAITOTARA SCHOLARS Further grants to seven native pupils, including three in Waitotara, have been made by the Taranaki Maori Trust Board through the Rima Wakura Memorial Fund, which was established in 1938 to assist young Taranaki Maoris to receive secondary school education on approved lines. The fund originates from money granted by Parliament to tTTe board annually, as compensation for land) confiscated from the West Coast tribes, and the money so granted is administered by the board for the benefit of the Maori people between Parininihi and Waitotara. Rima Wakarara was one of the original members of the Land Board, holding office from 1929. He became chairman of the board in 1934 and so continued until he died in Nukumaru on August 11, 1936. In 1936 he was appointed a representative of the Maori people on the Taranaki Provincial Centennial Council. The following are the applicants to whom grants have been made and the schools which are attended: New Plymouth Girls' High School: Tuti Wetere, New Plymouth; Ira Skipper, New Plymouth. New Plymouth Boys’ High School: Rex Simpson, New Plymouth. Wanganui Collegiate School: Taps Noema, Waitotara; Tawake Noema. Waitotara. Nelson College: Marangai Elkington. Nelson. Wanganui Technical College: Mikl Pirika, Waitotara.
