COAL MINERS ON STRIKE

TROUBLE AT WESTPORT MEN IN TOUCH WITH WELLINGTON [ Per Press Association, ] WESTPORT, Feb. 25. Millerton miners, who have been on strike since last Friday, were still idle to-day. The nature of the dispute is not yet clear, but the Westport Coal Company, owners of the mine, learned that the men have been in communication with Wellington with a view to discussing the stoppage. The strike has also occurred a 1 the Hydro-Westport coalmine, Seddonville, affecting 18 men. It is understood the subject in dispute is the payment by contract or day labour, on which question the miners themselves appear to have divided opinions.
