W.D.F.U.

WANGANUI BRANCH The Wanganui branch of the W.D.F.U. commenced its new year meetings last Wednesday, when the following members were present: Mrs. A. McPhail (president), Mesdames Berry, Brown, Burtt, Butcher, Carson, Fantham, Gray, Hair, Hardy, Howie, Hunger, McDougall, Mason, Pollock, Prowse, Skilton, Soundy, and Misses Mackintosh, Jordan, Polson, Sampson and Worgen. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs. Allen, Mrs. J. Blylh, Me.sdames I. Graham, Lambert, Lampitt, Scott, Slater, Spurdie, Revell, Robinson and Wickham. The president welcomed ail members back to work and expressed the hope that the vacation had fitted them for their numerous activities. A motion of condolence wiln all who had suffered bereavement was carr.ed in silence, special mention being made of the relatives of the late Mis. Morton, Mrs. McDonnell, ano Mr. Leslie Caiman (killed in action at Bardia). In reply to a letter from the Air Force Relations’ president, it was decided that all members should assist the Caledonian Fair to be held early in March. As no permit could be granted for petrol, it was found impossible to charter a bus for the “Kaianga Moe” garden party, but several lames very generously offered their cars and fifteen members availed themselves of the opportunity to visit the “Home,” which is so worthy of support, catering, as it does, for the needs of those who desire a perfect rest, among charming surroundings, and catered for by a competent and kindly staff. The president urged that all who could do so should make an effort to visit the place as this was the best means of quickening their interest and of rousing their enthusiasm to support the institution. Mrs. W. Fernies’ generous gift of £lO and that of Mrs. C. Hunger for £1 Is were much appreciated and the donors were given a hearty round of applause. The president intimated that the provincial meeting would be held in Trinity Parlour on the last Wednesday of this month, when all members were entitled to attend. The singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting, after which afternoon tea was served.
