STRIKES HANDICAP DEFENCE PLANS

PRODUCTION HELD UP MICHIGAN, Feb. 24. Mr. A. H. Shaw, a director of the Motor Wheel Corporation, announced a strike settlement, affecting 4,000,000 dollars’ worth of defence orders. Employees of Bethlehem Steel’s Lackawanna plant have voted in favour of a strike. The New York Times reports that before these two strikes there was a total of 16 strikes, blocking 60,000,000 dollars’ worth of defence orders. Many dependent factories were forced to close altogether and 23,000 workers are idle. Allis Chalmers strikers alone lost 1,560,000 working hours. The Foreign Policy Association today warned consumers to prepare to face an increasing measure of sacrifice to permit the fulfilment of rearmament needs.
