Mr. P. S. Delaney. Auckland representative for Pan-American Airways left by the Mariposa on Saturday on a five-week business visit to Australia. Hon, F. Langstone, Minister ol Lands and M.P. for Waimarino, will attend the Rangitikei A. and P. Show at Taihape to-mcrrow. Mr. P. J. Cox was re-elected chairman at the annual meeting of the citizens' comrfiittee of the Wellington West Coast Regimental Band. Mr. A. C. Dawson, general manager of the United Insurance Company, Limited, Sydney, arrived at Auckland by flying-boat on Sunday on a visit to the Dominion. The Hon. W. E. Barnard, Speaker of the House of Representatives, who is a second lieutenant in the Hawke’s Bay Regiment in camp at Waiouru, spent the week-end in Auckland. On the motion of Cr. J. J. Scott, a vote of sympathy was passed with the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C.. at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui City Council last night, on the death of his mother, Mrs. A. E. Curry, who died in England recently. The Most Rev. Dr. T. O'Shea, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Wellington and Metropolitan, will return to Wellington on Friday from Christchurch, where he has been attending the jubilee of the Bishop of Christchurch, Rt. Rev. Dr. M. ,T. Brodie. Mr. J. G. Pendreigh, president of the Wanganui Builders' and Contractors’ Industrial Union of Employers, left on Monday for Christchurch, where he will attend as delegate the annual conference of the New Zealand Builders’ Federation. Cr. R. E. Cuthbertson was granted leave of absence till after May by the Wanganui City Council last night. Cr. Cuthbertson advised that for business reasons it was essential for him to remain in Turangi, and suggested that another councillor be appointed chairman of the Tramway Committee. Cr. S. J. Harris was subsequently appointed to till this office.

The death occurred in Auckland on Saturday of Mr. Alfred Hammond, aged 72, who for 20 years was an officer in the detective di .iston in Auckland, and who retired m 1932 with the rank o" ■•hie* dete -.live. The death occurred in Auckland last week of Mr. Roderick Finlayson, aged 68 years. He was the son of the late Roderick and Isabel Finlayson. of Lochalsh, Ross Shire, Scotland. He came to New Zealand in 1896 an 1 served in the New Zealand Police Force from 1906 to 1917, being stationed at Auckland, Waihi and Palmerston North. In his younger days he was a prominent exponent of bagpipe music and had many successes to his credit. He was also an outstanding athlete, specialising in hammer throwing and tossing the caber. He leaves a wife and family of four—Roderick, lan, Isabel and Charles.

The death occurred at Hamilton on Saturday of Mr. Reuben Charles Derham Lightbourne, aged 58 years. Joining the staff of the Hawera School as a cadet teacher, Mr. Lightbourne was in the teaching profession for nearly 40 years. After teaching at various schools in Taranaki. Mr. Lightbourne was appointed to the Ohakune School, and from there he was appointed organising inspector and transferred to Hamilton. In 1922 he organised teaching work over the area which included North Auckland, the Waikato, the East Coast and the King Country. He later became headmaster of the Waihi District High School, and after several years he was appointed headmaster to the Huntly District High School, retiring from that post to live in Hamilton about three years ago, owing to ill-health.
