MUNICIPAL BAND The Patea Municipal Band added another to its long list of successes on ! Saturday when at Waitara it won the > quickstep 'competition open to all banejs in all grades throughout Taranaki. Five bands competed, including the Taranaki Regimental Band (New Plymouth), Inglewood, Stratford and Waitara Bands. Great praise is due to Drum-major J. Nairn, who trained the band in marching and to Bandmaster Christensen for his musical tuition. The band won by 10 points. Patea’s total was 87. Taranaki Regimental Band came next with 77 points. The Drum-Major's display, the prize for which was a gold medal, was won by J. Nairn (Patea), with a total of 881 points. The Waitara drum-major was second with 78 points. QUEEN CARNIVAL. A very successful shop and street day organised by the ladies and junior committee of the Patea Queen, was Held on Friday, as a result of which over £2O was realised. The competition for the box of chocolates was won by Miss McDowell. PARCEL EVENING. More than 40 people were present at a parcel evening at the Nurses’ Home on Saturday evening last. Each brought a parcel valued at least one shilling, and in a month's time these parcels will be sold at a big parcel drive, in aid of the funds of the Patea Queen. ThiJ is the first of the series of parcel evenings. An enjoyable time was spent in competitions, community singing and items. The competitions were won by Mesdames Illingworth and A. Marshall. Mesdames A. Marshall, J. Crawford, Misses M. Illingworth and M. Cowie delighted all present with solos. The accompaniste for the community singing was Mrs. J. H. Baker. A dainty supper was served by Mrs. R. M. Stevans and her group of workers, who were hostesses for the evening. HOME GUARD There was again an excellent attendance at the Home Guard parade on Saturday, when, in addition to the ordinary drill, a route march from the Domain to the beach was held. Some 234 members took part. The roll number now stands at 348, 18 additional members being enrolled on Saturday. The section detailed for the control of the roads in case of an emergency were instructed to their duties by Inspector Peterson. The parade state showed 280 men on parade. It was decided that the next parade be held on Monday, March 3, and not on Saturday next. PATEA GIRLS’ MARCHING TEAM WINS The Patea girls’ marching team on Saturday, at Waitara scored a wellmerited victory over five teams, including Lester (New Plymouth), which won the North Island Championship Cup, at New Plymouth, on New Year’s Day. The Patea girls were led by Miss Alma Lord, and coached by Mr. Ray Hill. Each member of the team received a miniature silver cup as a prize. The team consisted of: Miss Alma Lord (leader), Misses K. Hamblyn, E. Wills, O. and M. Bills, C. Fitzwater and J. Head. PAIRS BOWLING TOURNEY A pairs tournament was held on the Patea greens on Saturday, in perfect weather. The winners were ■*. Oakley (lead) and Walter White (skip).
