PAIRS TOURNEY CONCLUDES FINAL TO BROWN AND HERD, ST. JOHN’S With eight pairs qualifying for post-section play in the Wanganui Bowling Centre's open pairs tournament, which was concluded yesterday in fine weather, A. W. Brown and W. G. Herd (St. John’s) won the final from W. M. Gordon olid J. Steel (Wanganui).

At the conclusion of play, Mr. W. J. Stone, president of the centre, presented trophies and congratulated the winners and runners-up. The players returned thanks. Steel and Glover In the semi-final between Steel and Glover, the scoring was very close all through the game. With a five on the fourth end, the score was 6-5 lo Glover. After this, Glover obtained all his points in singles. On the ninth tlie score was 9-all. On the 13th. it was again level, 11-all. The 19th. saw them again on equal terms, 15-all and the 20th. and 21st. brough three and two, respectively, to Steel, giving him victory by five points. When the 21st. was being played it built up badly for Glover and, in trying to burn it, he took out all his own bowls except one, which was third shot. Herd and Harris Herd and W. Harris, who played the other semi-final, also had a very close run all through. On the 10th. the score was 7-all. The 14th. made them 10-all, and one to Harris on the 18th. made the card read 13-12 to Herd. A single on the 19th. and a brace on the 20th. to Herd made the score 16-12 to him. Harris secured a single on the 21st„ giving him defeat by 3 points. This left Herd and Steel to play the final. Final Described In the final, Steel opened proceedings with a modest single. Herd did likewise on the second. On the fifth the score was 3-all. A single to Steel on the sixth and the same to Herd on the seventh made them equal, 4-alI. Three to Herd on the 11th. put him in front 8-7. A single to Steel on the 12th. again put them even, 8-all. A brace to Steel on the 14th., and a single to Herd on the 15th. made the score 10-all. Two to Herd on the 16th. and the same to Steel on the 17th. again put them on even terms, 12-all. In the 18th. a single to Steel made the score 13-12 to him. Three to Herd on die 19th. put him two In front A si.iglfi to Steel on the 20th., with the same to Herd on the 21st., made the final score 16-14 to Herd. Two points v,as the greatest difference between the players at any stage. On no fewer than six occasions they were on even terms. The game v/is a fine exhibition of play.
