PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL

REPORT OF MONTHLY MEETING. (Own Correspondent.) PATEA, Feb. 12. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Patea County Council was held yesterday, Mr. Belton presiding. Crs. Watkins, Watt, Back, Lupton, Gibbs, Pearce, Campbel, and Hurley were also present. The Land and Survey Department wrote stating there was no means by which it could reimburse the council for grubbing gorse on the Village Settlement Road.—Received. The-Director of National Service wrote stating that the Director-Gen-eral Post and Telegraph Department had been appointed Controler of Communications. The district engineer wrote stating that he was arranging for repairs to the gate-way leading to the Ball R.oad Station.—Received. The traffic inspector reported that six drivers had been tested during the month of January, two failing. Eight warnings were issued and seven motor vehicles weighed. The health inspector reported that three cases of infectious disease were notified during the quarter, and routine inspection of dwellings and food premises had been carried out. It was decided that Cr. Gibbs represent the council on the Patea Harbour Board. The chairman congratulated Cr. Gibbs on his election and said he felt sure that his wide knowledge of the district would enable him to make a success of his new office. The local unit of the Home Guard wrote applying for a grant towards current expenses. The clerk said he had had a verbal request from the Manutahi Home Guard for a grant of £5. Cr. Gibbs said Waverley and Waitotara had been granted £2 10s each. Cr. Watt moved that £5 be granted to the Patea unit and £2 10s to Manitahi. The Wanganui-Rangitikei Electric Power Board wrote stating that they will supply lighting free of charge for the Home Guard parades at Waitotara. Mr. S. W. Smitheram wrote applying for the right to graze the road and reserves adjoining his property for a period of five years. He offered the sum of £1 Is and offered to k-'-ep the area clear of weeds with whici 't was at present infested.—The request was granted subject to the engineer's approval of the boundaries for the necessary fencing. The tendency is to be at the will of the council. Mr. J. Marchant wrote tendering his resignation as a member of the outside staff of the council The resignation was accepted as also was that of Mr. W. A. Stevens, another member of the outside staff. District reports were received and also the engineer’s report, and accounts were read and passed for payment and the council rose.
