GARDEN PARTY

ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON Interesting games and the attractions of various stalls arranged on the porch and in gaily striped tents on the lawn, provided entertainment for a large gathering at the home of Mrs . J. Brownlie, Brunswick, on Saturday afternoon, when a garden party’ was held to aid the funds of the Westmere Women’s Institute.

Mrs. Williams, president of the Wanganui Federation Of Women's Institutes, opened the sale and party. In a brief address she spoke of the activities of the Westmere W.1., which is one of the oldest institutes in the district. On behalf of the institute Mrs. Williams expressed thanks to Mrs. Brownlie for her generosity in lending the beautiful grounds for the party and hoped all would have a pleasant afternoon. Mrs. W. G. Cooper, who introduced Mrs. Williams, voiced the thanks of the members to the hostess for her kindness and hospitality. On the lawn at the side of the house amusing games were keenly contested, and other entertainments included a gracefully danced gavotte. The dancers, who had been trained by Mrs. Howard Flynn, wore quaint old-world costumes, each in a different colour and with white wings. Bodices were laced with black ribbons, and the “boys” had lace ruffles and jabots on their jackets and held lace handkerchiefs. Mrs. V. Wilson (piano) and Miss E. Smith (violin) played the music for the dance. Those taking part were Mesdames H. Flynn and D. Winwood, Misses A. Crawley, D. Gordon, B. Penwarden, B. Wilson, P. Ross, J. Hile-Smith, P. Ayling, J. Skilton, A. Skilton, D. Smith, E. Waters, G. Winwood, J. Chesswas and B. Dawes.

Seats had been placed round the lawn, also in a secluded garden surrounded by apple trees, where afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Brownlie and Barnes, asisted by a bevy of girls. The stalls and stallholders were: Produce, Mrs. E. Prince and Mrs. A. Budge; meat, Mrs. R. Taylor and Master Taylor; sweets, ice cream and drinks, Mrs. H. Flynn, Misses P. Ayling, N. Taylor and E. Waters; cakes, Mesdames W. G. Cooper. D. Preston, C. Dickenson; white elephant, Mrs. W. J. Robinson; games, Mrs. V. Wilson and Miss E. Smith; entertainments, Mrs. Low. Mrs. Simmonds was in charge of the gate.

The perfect weather, the lovely garden with its roses, dahlias and other summer flowers, surrounded by trees and shrubs, and the entertaining programme were enjoyed by the visitors.
