FREED BY LOCOMOTIVES

STEAMER AGROUND IN GREY RIVER ONLY SLIGHTLY DAMAGED [ Per Press Association. ] GREYMOUTH, Feb. 7. The Union Company’s steamer Korowai stranded on an isolated shingle bank in the Grey River at 7 a.m., while turning to sail for Auckland with 140 tons of cargo, consisting of coal and timber. The same company’s motor-ship Kauri, on this evening’s tide, unsuccessfully endeavoured to free the Korowai, which, however, was liberated at 8.15 p.m. by two railway locomotives on the wharf. After pulling for half an hour the locomotives freed the vessel’s bow. The Korowai, which sails to-morrow evening, was only slightly damaged in the stern belting.
