RATANA’S PROGRESS
INTEREST IN WAR EFFORT STRONG HOME GUARDS In keeping with other sections of the community the Maoris at Ratana are taking their full share in the war effort. More than 120 are engaged in seasonal occupations in potato ml onion growing, on land between Palmerston North and Ratana. Others are engaged in shearing in Hawke’s Bay, and some are on development work at Ohakea. The Maori Women's Patriotic Guild is very active. More than 120 pupils attend the Ratana School, which is built on modern lines. The headmaster for the past four years, Mr. R. Parr, is now a lieutenant with the armed forces. Ratana is also the centre of a live Home Guard, which parades twice a week, including Sundays. It is under Captain T. Hiroti, M.C. The company has a fine parade ground and hall. Mr. H. T. Ratana, M.P. for Western Maori, is keenly interested in the progress of the Guard. Ratana is also the headquarters of the Home Guard for Wangaehu and Turakina units.
